Meet Bec Kerr
Behind Maungatua Equestrian and Arbek Pony Stud is Bec Kerr—a passionate horse trainer, coach, breeder, and rider dedicated to producing quality horses and helping riders build strong, confident partnerships with their horses.
With over 10 years of experience in horse training and coaching, Bec specialises in dressage and show jumping, with her training and teaching philosophy strongly grounded in Equitation Science principles. Her focus is always on creating correct foundations, improving rider position, and developing horses in a way that promotes confidence, understanding, and long-term success.
Bec has successfully competed in dressage through to Level 6, completing Inter I and PSG tests on her previous horse, Campion KSNZ. She is currently training at Level 5 dressage with Golden Strike, her standout German Riding Pony stallion who also stands at stud and forms the cornerstone of the breeding program at Arbek Pony Stud, however hasn’t competed him for a few years.
Alongside dressage, Bec has a strong passion for show jumping and show hunter, having competed successfully up to 1.20m. Some of her proudest achievements include being Reserve Champion Amateur Show Hunter at Horse of the Year Show with Tiraumea Curious George and winning the Amateur Show Hunter Title at Nationals with Dorofino.
Her current jumping horse is Balou du Precieuse, a rising young mare being produced for Show Jumping, she competed up to 1.10m in her first season of competition, with sights set on Amatuer Show jumping series in the coming season.
In addition to competing, Bec teaches riding lessons for riders of all ages and abilities, manages agistment and arena hire facilities at Maungatua Equestrian, and runs a carefully developed breeding program focused on quality German Riding Ponies and performance horses. Through Arbek Pony Stud, she stands Golden Strike at stud and works to expand and strengthen German Riding Pony bloodlines in New Zealand using carefully selected foundation mares including Roseglen Aphrodite, TF All Hallows Eve, and Summer Gift.
Outside of horses, spring sees Bec helping with calf rearing on her family’s dairy farm—because life on a farm never really slows down.
At the heart of everything Bec does is a genuine love for teaching and helping both horses and riders succeed. Whether it’s producing young horses, coaching riders toward their goals, or helping clients make confident decisions with their horses, her passion lies in creating solid foundations and setting people up for long-term success.
Bec holds a Certificate in Veterinary Nursing, Pony Club A and H Certificates, and a Diploma of Equitation Science, which forms the backbone of her practical, horse-first approach to training and coaching.
